OUR COMPLETE CALENDAR

Year Founded:
    1987
Description:
Twice the size of the old one, the Sea Center looks like a working marine laboratory. Visitors of all ages engage in something totally new – hands-on immersion in the work of scientists who explore, monitor & discover ways to preserve our oceans.
Over the past 16 years, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History has introduced the unique environments of the Santa Barbara Channel and the Channel Islands through our Sea Center located on Stearns Wharf. Unlike any other marine facility in the world, the Sea Center invites visitors to a hands-on exploration of the mysteries of the Santa Barbara Channel.
The new building encompasses the old Sea Center and The Nature Conservancy building -- into one compelling new facility. Cutting-edge exhibits put marine science research on display as an interactive educational experience. There are wet lab/classrooms for hands-on education.
Enormous public demand for understanding our local ocean environments has turned the Sea Center into an important educational facility, and one of a small number of ocean-related museum facilities on the Pacific Coast. Part of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, it will provide dynamic education for over 100,000 children and adults every year.

SHARKS…12 inches long? That's right! Sharks come in all sizes...big and small. SHARKS...bite size showcases sharks found in the Santa Barbara Channel. Come face-to-face with these marine predators and visit them at the touch pool. Discover facts about shark reproduction, their struggle for survival, and the impact humans have on sharks, the oceans, and our planet. Our new exhibit at the Ty Warner Sea Center, SHARKS…bite size, showcases some of the smaller sharks found in the Santa Barbara Channel like swell sharks, horn sharks, thornback rays, and other related species A highlight of this exhibit will be a brand new shark touch tank. Sea Center educators will guide visitors as they come face-to-face with harmless denizens of the deep. The exhibit will also explore sharks' reproductive processes and their struggle for survival, plus human impacts on sharks, the ocean, and our planet.  Email   Website
