Year Founded:
    1987
Description:
Twice the size of the old one, the new Sea Center looks like a working marine laboratory. Visitors of all ages engage in something totally new – hands-on immersion in the work of scientists who explore, monitor & discover ways to preserve our oceans.
Over the past 16 years, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History has introduced the unique environments of the Santa Barbara Channel and the Channel Islands through our Sea Center located on Stearns Wharf. Unlike any other marine facility in the world, the Center invites visitors to a hands-on exploration of the mysteries of the Santa Barbara Channel.
The new building encompasses the old Sea Center and The Nature Conservancy building -- into one compelling new facility. Cutting-edge exhibits put marine science research on display as an interactive educational experience. There are wet lab/classrooms for hands-on education.
Enormous public demand for understanding our local ocean environments has turned the Sea Center into an important educational facility, and one of a small number of ocean-related museum facilities on the Pacific Coast. Part of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, it will provide dynamic education for over 100,000 children and adults every year.
