Description:
Our singular focus is to improve the health and quality of life for men, women and children in Santa Barbara County - and millions around the world - who suffer from diabetes. We have been on the cutting edge of diabetes research, clinical care, and education since our founding in 1944 by Dr. William Sansum, the first physician in the U.S. to manufacture and administer insulin in the treatment of diabetes. William Sansum Diabetes Center advances new technologies and produces groundbreaking diabetes treatments, such as the development of an artificial pancreas that enables the automated delivery of insulin to patients.
Understanding that diet and lifestyle factors are key to the effective management and prevention of diabetes, the Center offers diabetes and nutrition education to Santa Barbara County residents impacted by the disease. The Center also provides direct clinical care to patients, such as pregnant women with diabetes, helping them to deliver healthy babies.

8/27/14 - Sansum Diabetes Research Institute changes its name to William Sansum Diabetes Center
> VIEW
> HIDE
To better reflect its founder, legacy and services, Sansum Diabetes Research Institute has officially changed its name to the William Sansum Diabetes Center and created a new logo representing its mission and future.
Seventy years after Dr. William D. Sansum founded the organization, the name change to William Sansum Diabetes Center not only pays homage to the first physician in the U.S. to administer insulin in the treatment of diabetes, it better reflects the organization's ongoing mission in research, education and care. In the local community, the name also serves to create further distinction from Sansum Clinic.
While research continues to be a primary focus, The Center has significantly contributed to diabetes and nutrition education and clinical care programs in pediatrics and diabetes complicated by pregnancy. The previous name did not convey the organization's significant role in education and clinical care. Along with a new name, The Center released a new logo of two interconnected rings representing collaboration as well as the organization's legacy in -- and infinite focus on -- improving the lives of those impacted by diabetes.
"Our new name reflects the idea that 'Sansum' is not just a brand or an entity; he was a man with a vision to improve the lives of those with diabetes. We continue to carry on that vision - and that charge - under his full name," said William Sansum Diabetes Center Executive Director Rem Laan. "2014 is not only a milestone anniversary year for The Center but it also marks a new era for us."
This year saw the expansion of The Center's team with the additions of Director of Research & Innovation Dr. David Kerr; Senior Research Physician and Pediatric Endocrinologist Dr. Jordan Pinsker; Director of Clinical Research Operations Ms. Leonie Bradford; Director of Education Ms. Sandy Andrews; and Director of Development Ms. Ada Conner.

3/16/12 - Sansum Diabetes Research Institute Receives $50,000 March of Dimes Grant for Seeds of Change Project
> VIEW
> HIDE
Sansum Diabetes Research Institute has received $50,000 from the California Chapter of the March of Dimes for year one of a three-year project. The award funds the Semillas del Cambio (Seeds of Change) Project, an interconception care program for women with diabetes.
Program participants will be chosen from a group of Santa Barbara County women who had gestational diabetes during their last pregnancy. A Spanish-language training toolkit will be developed that includes lesson plans, handouts, and teaching props for a six-session series. Lessons will focus on glucose control, healthy weight, blood pressure goals, breastfeeding benefits, physical activity, and the importance of zero-calorie drinks over sugary beverages. A strong emphasis will be placed on incorporating life-style changes.
Training will initially be taught by Sansum Diabetes staff. Graduates of the class will become Promatoras (peer heath advocates), who will in turn lead classes that will empower women who have had gestational diabetes to take charge of their health and prepare for their next pregnancy. The goal is for the classes to be completely Promatora-led and self-sustaining, as graduates train others and spread the reach of the program to an ever-widening audience.
Seeds of Change will primarily address the needs of low-income, medically-underserved, women with or at risk for diabetes who lack access to medical care and health education. The goal of this program is to impact the lives of these women and for many future generations in a low-cost, peer-led, self-sustaining manner.
Sansum Diabetes Research Institute is a research institute devoted to the prevention, treatment and cure of diabetes.
March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. With chapters nationwide and its premier event, March for Babies®, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
