Please come and visit us and taste our outstanding wines. Here's some history for you: In 1962 Pierre Lafond opened the first winery in Santa Barbara County since prohibition. It would be more than ten years before a second winery opened. Today, there are over 100! We moved to our current location in downtown Santa Barbara in 1964.
In 1971 Lafond Vineyards planted 65 acres in the Santa Rita Hills at the western tip of the Santa Ynez Valley. We purchased additional property accross the river and planteds 30 acres of Pinot Noir and Syrah in 1996. Construction of the new Lafond Winery began in 1998, with its first harvest in 2000 and opening to visitors in 2001.
in the summer of that year, Santa Rita Hills -- at the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley -- was recognized by the BATF (part of the Treasury Department which controls appellations) as a separate and distinct viticultural area. Being distinct in its climate and geography permitted wines grown in this cool and unique growing area to be identified as "Santa Rita Hills". In the spring of 2002 we released our SRH wines made exclusively from grapes grown in the Santa Rita Hills appellation. These 3 wines, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Chardonnay received 10 medals between them.
By the fall of 2006, our Wine Club membership had reached almost 1,000 where it was capped because many of our small lots are under 200 cases and it would make it almost impossible to meet shipments and re-orders otherwise. In the spring of 2009, we leased 37 acres from Burning Creek Ranch, adjoining the Lafond Vineyard, and began planting Pinot Noir from 8 selected clones.
