"Santa Paula is steeped in history. Wafting from its vintage brew are the heady fragrances of oil and citrus. Birthplace of the Union Oil Company of California and Citrus Capital of the World are just two of Santa Paula’s claims to fame. It has also been a center of the silent movie business when Gaston Melies held sway here with his Star Film Stock Company and home of the largest lemon ranch in the world." Excerpt from www.santapaulahistoricalsociety.org/Links-SantaPaula.htm
Today Santa Paula has the greatest collection of vintage homes, commercial buildings, churches and schools in Southern California, and is the home of the Santa Paula Airport, Aviation Museum of Santa Paula, the California Oil Museum, and the Limoneira Company. Equally historic is the Santa Paula Cemetery which dates to the early 1870s and continues to serve the city. In addition, farms of the pioneers continue to produce under the skilled supervision of their farming descendants.

The Other Place, one of the undisputed highlights of the 2013 Broadway season, floored audiences and critics alike and established Sharr White as one of the most talented emerging playwrights of recent years. Juliana Smithon is a successful neurologist whose life seems to be coming unhinged. Her husband has filed for divorce, her daughter has eloped with a much older man, and her own health is in jeopardy. but in this brilliantly crafted work, nothing is as it seems. Piece by piece, a mystery unfolds as fact blurs with fiction, past collides with present, and the elusive truth about Juliana boils to the surface.
The Other Place explores emotional territory in this haunting drama. "...a sense of disorientation unites audience and protagonist in the Other Place, a new drama by Sharr White about a forceful business woman confronting the onset of an illness whose nature keeps eluding her grasp." (NY Times.)

2/19/15 - Other Desert Cities ... coming to Santa Paula Theatre on February 27
> VIEW
> HIDE
“Other Desert Cities” tells the story of the fictional Wyeth family — a clan led at the top by a mother and father highly regarded in old Hollywood circles and admired by Republicans for their service to and friendship with Ronald and Nancy Reagan in their heyday. The play explores the dark family secrets that threaten to destroy external and internal perceptions about the life the members lead.
Family drama is well-traversed territory, but Baitz, 51, has laced the story with humor and wit, political commentary (setting it in 2004 after the Iraq War is underway), sharp dialogue and an affecting premise: The grown daughter, Brooke, a writer who has suffered a nervous breakdown, has just written a memoir about her life, her parents and their role in the tragic loss of her brother. But she has not told her parents, Polly and Lyman, of her plans to publish the memoir until the publication date nears while on a Christmas visit back home.
Among many other questions raised in the play, Baitz asks whether Brooke has a greater obligation to her family (who saved her during her darkest moments) or to the truth and to her work as a writer. (PBS - News Beat)

The "fools" in the play are battling lovers at a Mojave Desert motel. May is hiding out at said motel when an old childhood friend and old flame, Eddie, shows up. Eddie tries to convince May to come back home with him and live in the trailer on the farm they always wanted to buy. May refuses because she has started a new life and knows that if she goes back to Eddie their relationship will repeat the same destructive cycle it has before. Throughout the play the character of the Old Man — the father of both lovers — is present and talks to each of the other two characters. It is revealed that the Old Man had led a double life, abandoning each family for different parts of each child's life. The two became lovers in their high school years and when their parents finally figured out what had occurred Eddie's mother shot May's mother. May is afraid that Eddie has begun to emulate his father; taking to drinking and secretly seeing a woman May refers to as the Countess. The play centers around the drama of the confrontation rather than a plot with a rising and falling action. In the end the two lovers have not reconciled, the Old Man begins to lose himself to his own delusions, and a stranger is left on stage to observe it all.

Local playwright Kimberly Demmary’s new play Seatbelts Required, is a rollercoaster of grief, amusement and heart. After their mother’s funeral, three sisters gather at the house they grew up in and try to come to terms with the destruction their mother brought to their lives. As the afternoon progresses, they hesitantly try to connect through remembered laughter and sorrow as harrowing memories of their childhoods are brought to the surface. As sometimes traumatic memories are brought to the surface, they struggle to realize that, though they have been wounded, they are connected by a deeply shared bond and they can only look to each other for healing.
“With shades of Albee’s Zoo Story, the first scene begins with light hearted banter, and gradually crescendos to an intense, almost volatile, powerful second act.” ~Talucan Times
