Year Founded: 1985 Description: Located at 3050 Los Angeles Avenue this Gothic structure has served the Simi Valley community since the mid 1920's when it was constructed as the Simi Community Methodist Episcopal Church. Since then it has also served as a mortuary, Jewish temple, a residence and even a temporary high school. It was the anchor building for an area that came to be known as "community center". In 1991, the City of Simi Valley acquired the property for reuse as a Cultural Arts Center. The project included both the conversion of the building for cultural and community uses and restoration of the original historical features of the building which was approved as Ventura County Historical Landmark No. 67 in July of 1981. On November 3 and 4, 1995 it reopened as the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center with star of stage and screen Rita Moreno in concert. Since then, the Cultural Arts Center has been host to hundreds of performances - plays, musicals, concerts, art shows, films, weddings, receptions, business meetings, youth festivals, and much more. Patrons from near and far have come to enjoy the Center's quality entertainment at family-friendly prices. The facility includes a 200 seat main theater, with newly renovated individual theater seating on the main floor as well as the balcony. The theater is fully equipped with state of the art sound and lighting equipment, making it a favorite venue to perform for many musical artists because of the excellent acoustics and warm atmosphere. The digital projector and full size movie screen provide the perfect setting for film festivals or special screenings. There are two art galleries showcasing both regional and local artists throughout the year, as well as a working fireplace and two fully equipped dressing rooms. The multipurpose community room with a seating capacity of 70-90 on the lower level is host to various business meetings, receptions, parties and more with a fully functioning catering kitchen adjoining. With blockbuster productions such as "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Jesus Christ Superstar", to sold out concerts by Ronny and Classics and Ticket To Ride: A Beatles Tribute, to international virtuoso performances by Nabil Azzam, Sasha Toperich, Aloke Das Gupta and others, audiences continue to give the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center rave reviews, making it Ventura County's choice for affordable family entertainment! 3/1 - Legally Blonde -The Musical at Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center Now |
|
Presented by Actors' Repertory Theatre of Simi. Nominated for seven Tony Awards, Legally Blonde (music and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe & Nell Benjamin, book by Heather Hach) is the story of Perennially perky Elle Woods, a girl who loves to be pampered and shop for the latest all-pink outfits (and matching handbags, of course). But don't let this seemingly ditzy fashionista fool you, this sorority sister is smarter than she seems and doesn't take "no" for an answer. So when her boyfriend dumps her for someone "more serious," Elle sets out to win him back by putting down the credit card and hitting the books. Ready to revamp her image, Elle goes where no Delta Nu sorority girl has gone before: Harvard Law School! Takes you from the sorority house to the halls of justice with Broadway's blondest new student, that daredevil in high heels Elle Woods (who has the cutest sidekick in the world, her Chihuahua Bruiser). Along the way, our heroine proves that being yourself and going after what you want never goes out of style.

2/7 - Last Weekend of BERLIN: The Music of Irving Berlin -- January 19 |

The most commercially successful of all American songwriters during the first half of the twentieth century, Irving Berlin was neither American-born nor able to read or write music. Berlin could play only the black keys of the piano, using a special lever to transpose out of F sharp and having an assistant transcribe the music. Born Israel Baline in Russia to a cantor and his wife, the child never received any real musical education; when the family came to the United States, his father abandoned music. Israel sang for pennies on the street and eventually got a job as a singing waiter, attracting attention with his risqué parodies of popular songs. Join Maestro Gary Poirot at the baby grand as he presents and evening of Irving Berlin’s music and memories featuring a stellar cast of SVCAC audience favorites: Brittney Wheeler, Alexandra Lastort, Judi Domroy, Carolyn Freeman Champ, Brenden MacDonald, Jonathan Bluth, Seth Kamenow, Nick T. Ferguson, Joelle Georgeff, Andy Mattick, and Renee Schwartz. Directed by Gary Poirot and Fred Helsel with Choreography by Keenon T. Hooks. 9/5 - Damn Yankees opens on Saturday |
|
Among the most beloved musicals of all time, "Damn Yankees" won seven Tony Awards in 1956, including Best Musical. Joe Boyd, a middle-aged fan of the hapless Washington Senators, trades his soul to the devilishly charming Mr. Applegate for the chance to dethrone the vaunted New York Yankees and lead his team to the pennant. He becomes young baseball phenom Joe Hardy and transforms his Senators into a pennant contender. But at what cost? Hardy leaves Boyd's life in the lurch, and only with the help of the seductress Lola does he have a chance at redemption. Pulsating with energy and hit songs like "You Gotta Have Heart" and "Whatever Lola Wants," "Damn Yankees" instantly assumed its place as one of the great Broadway musicals. In addition to the seven Tony Awards it won in 1956, the 1994 Broadway revival garnered another five nominations including Best Revival (Musical). George Abbott and Douglass Wallop wrote the book, with music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. "Damn Yankees" is based on the novel "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant" by Wallop. From the artistic team that brought SVCAC audiences HAIRSPRAY and PIPPIN, Damn Yankees is directed by Fred Helsel with musical direction by Gary Poirot and choreography by Becky Castells. Tickets are $22 for Adults, $18 for Seniors & Students and $16 for Children 12 & under. For reservations, call (805) 583-7900. Venue: Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center. Website
