DESCRIPTION
   More than a thousand volunteers help repair classrooms, shelters and playgrounds, paint over graffiti, organize inventory, build garden beds and plant trees, etc. -- tasks that these local local United Way agencies don't have the money or resources to do themselves.
   "Day of Caring" is an opportunity to help local United Way services with your time and energy on a September Saturday morning. There will be enough tasks to suit everyone who wants to help out, such as envelope stuffing, activities helping children, painting, and cleaning.
   It also marks the kickoff of the Annual Community Campaign which benefits your local "United Way". A free continental breakfast will be served at Page Youth Center to all participants, and if you register in time you'll receive a free T-shirt identifying you as a Day of Caring Volunteer.
   You will be met at your assigned agency by a staff person or volunteer who will organize and supply you with whatever tools you might need. Sunscreen, Hats, water and work gloves are recommended to bring!

On Saturday, September 20th, 2014, United Way of Santa Barbara County will hold its 23rd Annual Day of Caring, an opportunity to give back to the local community. Throughout the day, volunteers will help over 40 local non-profit organizations, schools, parks and churches throughout the county of Santa Barbara.
Day of Caring will start with a free Kick-Off breakfast rally, sponsored by Albertsons, at 8:00 a.m. at the Page Youth Center in Goleta. Volunteers of all ages will proceed from the breakfast to community service assignments in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Santa Maria for a wide range of important projects; including cleaning & painting at Casa Esperanza, making adobe bricks for the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation at the Presidio, orchard clean up at Alpha Resource Center, and gardening at Monroe Elementary School.
With last years’ volunteer hours estimated to be worth $375,000 in services to the community, Day of Caring continues to have a significant impact on the Santa Barbara community and is a testament to the spirit of our local volunteerism.

United Way of Santa Barbara County’s Young Leaders Society celebrates its 5th Anniversary with a sunset cruise on the Condor Express. The celebration will honor the group, which was formed in 2009 to provide community involvement, encourage philanthropy and provide personal development opportunities for young professionals. 10/4/13 - 22nd Annual Day of Caring – Making a Difference in Santa Barbara County

On Saturday, September 28, 2013 United Way of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC) coordinated the 22nd Annual Day of Caring volunteer event. At 8 a.m. volunteers gathered at the Ben Page Youth Center and enjoyed the Albertsons’ Kick Off Breakfast.
At the kick-off, the Dos Pueblos Drumline marched into Ben Page Center followed by the Santa Barbara City College Cheer Squad to rally volunteers and create excitement. First District Supervisor Salud Carbajal said a few heartfelt and encouraging words to the volunteers, followed by the San Marcos High School Madrigals performing the National Anthem. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. volunteers helped local non-profit agencies with “hands-on” work assignments.
Over 1,400 volunteers participated, including young people from local schools, families, churches, community service groups and workplaces at over 45 sites across the Tri-counties. The largest team for the 4th year in a row was Santa Barbara City College, led by Lisa Lopez. Some of the largest work sites included Goleta Valley Beautiful at San Marcos High School, Alpha Resource Center, Santa Barbara City College, Shoreline Park and Angels Bearing Gifts. Projects varied between landscape work, planting, painting, habitat restoration and office work throughout Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Santa Ynez. The work that was done in just four hours equals to more than $260,000 worth of improvements to the Santa Barbara Community. United Way of Santa Barbara County hosted its 90th Annual Awards Celebration at the Four Seasons Biltmore Resort in Montecito, on Wednesday, May 15, 2013. This annual dinner recognizes local organizations and individuals for contributing to the community and United Way activities, such as its Fun in the Sun program. The event was made possible partially by the Biltmore’s and Floral Ambiance’s generous sponsorships. First District Supervisor Salud Carbajal, Master of Ceremonies, was assisted by Cynder Sinclair, CEO of Nonprofit Kinect in presenting the evening’s awards.

Free bi-lingual tax return preparation and filing for individuals & families earning less than $53,000 -- United Way of Santa Barbara County’s Financial Empowerment Partnership is hosting its annual Mega Tax Day and Financial Literacy Resource Fair to help Santa Barbara County residents alleviate the financial stress of tax preparation and returns. Trained, experienced, IRS certified volunteers will provide free income tax return preparation and E-Filing for those with 2012 incomes under $53,000.
In addition, the event offers a variety of resources on how to plan and save for emergencies, college, and retirement. Participating organizations and businesses will be giving out prizes for visiting financial literacy tables. Salud Carbajal, Santa Barbara County 1st District Supervisor, and Helene Schneider, City of Santa Barbara Mayor, will make a short presentation at 11:00am.
Please come prepared with: Social Security card or ITIN no., W-2 forms, 1099 if applicable/ documents on all forms of income, childcare provider information (name, address, tax number), picture I.D., and bank routing/account number for direct deposit of refund.
In 2012, United Way of Santa Barbara County’s Financial Empowerment Partnership prepared approximately 2,300 returns that dispersed $4.3 million dollars in refunds. As of March 1st, 2013, United Way’s Financial Empowerment Partnership (FEP) has prepared approximately 1,500 tax returns, disbursing $2.2 million dollars in refunds! All free tax preparation activities are completed by IRS certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) preparers.

Congresswoman Lois Capps, Mayor Helene Schneider and over 1,500 volunteers join forces to serve the Santa Barbara communities in the largest, single-day volunteer event in the Tri-Counties -- kicking off its Annual Community Campaign which raises funds to support community driven 10-year goals in Education, Financial Stability and Health. For the past 19 years, United Way of Santa Barbara County has been putting on an annual Day of Caring in which volunteers from all over the county form teams to participate in much needed service projects at local non-profits and charitable organizations. 6/1/11 - Coastal Fund Awards Grant to S.B. County’s United Way for Fun in the Sun-Summer of Service Program

UC Santa Barbara’s Associated Students Coastal Fund awarded Santa Barbara County’s United Way (UWSBC) Fun in the Sun-Summer of Service (FITS-SOS) program $6,920.00. ----- Jeanette Delgado, a staff member at the United Way of Santa Barbara County, said that “with support from The Coastal Fund we will soon begin to train the UCSB FITS-SOS student staff members who will be guiding and mentoring the kids.” ----- According to Ms. Delgado the UCSB students chosen to participate in the program are “students who have an environmental background [and will be] and helping the at risk and low-income community guiding them through the service learning program.” The middle school students will research and complete projects that focus on improving and developing new methods of beach enhancement and preservation for UCSB’s surrounding beaches. “The participants start the camp by brainstorming and research on the area’s environmental needs of the UCSB shore line area,” Ms. Delgado explained. “The participants will then implement their project’s plans throughout the seven weeks.” ----- In alignment with service-learning standards, FITS-SOS students will be able to improve the environmental conditions of beaches through their student-driven project, gain knowledge, and develop skills in beach preservation, conservation, and improvement. This unique partnership will also help FITS-SOS students develop leadership, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills while positively changing the conditions of UCSB’s beaches in a team setting. ----- FITS-SOS “will be at the Devereux slough with 13 middle school students (incoming 6th-9th graders), two interns and one program leader,” and will engage their students in community-based service intensive, learning projects that are structured to address environmental and disaster preparedness issues. ----- These projects are designed to produce identifiable improvements to the community. This opportunity provides youth, particularly those from disadvantaged circumstances, with service-learning experiences that motivate them to become more civically engaged and inspire them to pursue a higher education career. In addition, FITS-SOS qualified participants who are able to complete 100 or more hours of service-learning activities during the 7-week program are eligible to receive a $500 college scholarship. ----- United Way of Santa Barbara County has hired a UCSB student program coordinator for this summer as well a  Website

The event will honor Jelinda DeVorzon and AGIA Insurance Services for their many years of community excellence. This year we are having an online auction prior to the event with the bidding on a number of fun and unique items to raise money for United Way's United for Literacy in conjunction with the Fun in the Sun program. Fun in the Sun leverages community resources in this partnership of 30 local organizations. The program helps local kids 6 to 12 years old living in homes with limited resources to succeed. Over 350 at risk kids from Goleta to Carpinteria received scholarships to this 2010 summer program that addresses complex behavioral, academic and basic need factors.   Website
