The purpose of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)in April is to increase public understanding about sexual violence in our society. For SAAM, Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center is conducting a campaign which focuses on asking 500 community members to make positive and encouraging statements to survivors of sexual assault. Our campaign is called Be 1 in 500.
More than 500 community members made empowering and motivational statements to survivors of sexual assault. A YouTube video was created from the slides of photographs of participants holding their signs with words of encouragement. The Be 1 in 500 Campaign video will make its debut on April 24th!
The Be 1 in 500 Campaign was sparked as a response to Project Unbreakable, a photography project created by Grace Brown. Brown works with survivors of sexual assault, photographing them holding a poster with a quote from their perpetrator. We will be hosting Grace Brown’s Project Unbreakable at UCSB in the Student Resource Center Multipurpose Room on Denim Day, Wednesday, April 24, 2013 from 5:30-7:30pm.

4/4/12 - Jeans 4 Justice Campaign for SAAM, Sexual Assault Awareness Month
> VIEW
> HIDE
Since April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center is conducting the Jeans for Justice Campaign, which encourages community members to wear jeans/denim and a button that says “Why Denim?” to raise awareness about myths that keep us from holding perpetrators accountable. The Jeans for Justice Campaign came about from Denim Day, which began in 1999 following an Italian Supreme Court decision to overturn a rape conviction because the survivor wore jeans. The justices said that since jeans are not easily removed without cooperation, and “impossible” to remove if someone is resisting, the act must have been consensual and therefore not a sexual assault. The decision did not recognize that coercion, threats and force are inherent in rape and survivors must not be the ones to bear the blame for this crime. As a result, supporters will wear jeans on Denim Day, April 25, 2012 to protest this ruling, and the many lingering myths surrounding sexual assault. The Jeans for Justice Campaign will raise awareness about sexual violence and debunk the myth that a person’s dress style invites sexual assault. Please visit our website to find out more about the several events we have planned for SAAM and our Jeans 4 Justice Campaign!  Email   Website
