Another great day for cetaceans
Posted: 5/19/17
4 humpback whales and 75 long-beaked common dolphins were seen during our crossing of the Santa Barbara Channel and visit to Santa Cruz Island today. Winds were very calm near the mainland and there was only a light breeze at the island. It was another great day for cetaceans.
After leaving Santa Barbara Harbor at 10 am, Captain Dave steered a course for beautiful Santa Cruz Island. Just past the half-way mark, near The Lanes, approximately 75 dolphins located the Condor Express and rode our wake on all sides. Great looks were had by all. Continuing southbound, about 4 miles off the northern face of Santa Cruz Island, a single humpback whale found us and we had very nice looks. Soon, a second humpback, further off the island, was spotted and we watched it too.
Dave did his usual great presentation about Santa Cruz Island, and then took the boat into the mouth of the world-famous Painted Cave. This is always a treat and can only be accomplished when seas are calm. Leaving The Cave, Dave headed west. Soon a pair of humpbacks were encountered and these beasts fluked-up quite regularly.
