Highlights of the Permanent Collection
  Opens February 7, 2016 – Ongoing
Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara CA

In celebration of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s 75th Anniversary in 2016, this installation highlights the most celebrated works of art from SBMA’s permanent collection, as well as several of the most exciting gifts and acquisitions in the areas of modern and contemporary art, photography, and the arts of Asia. The small works on paper gallery features favorite photographs of former curator, Karen Sinsheimer, as a tribute to her vision in the building of the permanent collection. This eclectic group of objects, meant to sample the breadth and diversity of the permanent collection while some of the Museum’s galleries are temporarily closed for renovation, includes favorites such as the sensual life-size bronze Bather Putting Up Her Hair (1932) by Aristide Maillol, the haunting Yuan dynasty Seated Luohan (13th century), and the important, early painting by the famed Bay Area Figuration artist Richard Diebenkorn. Ridley-Tree Gallery also continues to showcase favorites of 19th-century Impressionism, such as the beloved Villas in Bordighera (1884) by Claude Monet, along with the long-term loans from the Armand Hammer Foundation and the collection of Michael Armand Hammer. Works of art honoring the collecting acumen of Karen Sinsheimer include photographs such as Michael Light’s captivating appropriation of Southern Lunar Hemisphere (1999)—a work that demonstrates the late curator’s fascination with innovative intersections of art and science.    ($5 - $10)

Interventions: Cayetano Ferrer
  November 8, 2015 – March 13, 2016
Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara CA

This site-specific installation reveals the artist’s ongoing investigation into what he calls object prosthetics—the reconstruction of broken remains using a variety of conceptual and technological methods. Ferrer is interested in architectural fragments—as both objects and as ideas. His Composite series of sculpture is made by filling in pieces of marble or stone with digitally printed PVC that acts as a stand-in for what is perceived as “missing.” What results is a reimagining that can be considered both authentic as well as speculative. Hybrid sculptures that represent part fantasy and part elegy, Ferrer’s works provide the viewer ample space to imagine what lies between historical fact and invention.

CALIFORNIA 101: Art from the Collection
Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UCSB Campus, Santa Barbara CA

CALIFORNIA 101: Art from the Collection features artists that studied or lived for a significant period of time in the Golden State. For many years, the art world dismissed the West Coast as a creative backwater. In critical seclusion, post-war artists used California's art schools and universities, including UCSB, to build a network of artist collectives and social movements that spurred innovation and fostered the rise of conceptual art. This exhibition focuses on work from the Museum's collection created during this critical period through to the present day. Including works tied to the Feminist and Black Arts movements, postmodern photography, painting, sculpture, and video art. CALIFORNIA 101 has been mounted in conjunction with Prof. Jenni Sorkin’s class, Art in California, 1940-2016, who will use the works on view for teaching and research purposes.

Lucile Lloyd: A Life in Murals
Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UCSB Campus, Santa Barbara CA

This exhibition focuses on the life and work of California muralist and designer Lucile Lloyd (1894-1941). Lloyd worked closely with architects in creating murals and decorative designs for churches, schools and private residences around the Los Angeles area as well as producing work for the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Arts Project. Lloyd’s designs vary from abstract motifs to historical figures to religious and mythological scenes but they all share her sense of imagination and use of vivid color. Also on loan for the first time is her exquisite altarpiece from the St. Mary of the Angels Church in Los Feliz, California. Curated by Alexandra Adler, BA 2014 Art History.

Stars and Candy Wrappers, Artist-in-Residence: Stephen Westfall
Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UCSB Campus, Santa Barbara CA

As the 2015 Artist-in-Residence, Stephen Westfall (BA 1975, MFA 1978) has been commissioned to execute a massive painting covering all four walls of Nachman Gallery. Westfall's signature hardedge, geometric brand of abstraction will transform the gallery surfaces into a series of multicolored diamonds, clustered together and floating individually according to an underlying pattern of arrangement. Westfall's design is based on his longstanding investigation of grids, color arrangements, signs and painterly influences that include Picasso's harlequins, Matisse's dancers and Renaissance figures.

The Art of Colonial Latin America
Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UCSB Campus, Santa Barbara CA

Drawn entirely from the Museum’s Collection, this exhibition focuses on the upper division course, The Arts of Spain and New Spain, taught by Deborah Spivak, Ph.D., History of Art and Architecture Department at UCSB. This course charts both the revolution of the arts in 16th and 17th century Spain and their influence and transformation in the visual culture of the New World. The works on view demonstrate the creative interaction of the European and indigenous traditions in the paintings and wood carvings that were produced in this rich artistic period. The objects in the exhibition span the 17th and 18th centuries in both Central and South America. Students in the course will be writing papers about the form, content, and affective properties of the objects on display.
