Few of Montecito's fabled estates have remained essentially unchanged. An exception is the Casa del Herrero which has been in the hands of the original family since it was constructed over 75 years ago. The Casa is noted as one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It provides visitors a glimpse into Montecito life as the Steedmans lived it in the 1930s. The estate's collection of European antique furnishing art and many personal effects are still in place as thet were when the Steedmans were in residence.   ($20.00

These sessions are among the outreach programs conducted by the non-profit community garden, situated on the campus of Trinity Lutheran Church. The early 1800’s in California people lived a life remembered as pleasant and simple in haciendas with green covered hills and cattle and horses being rounded up by vaqueros. Jim Avila, Dunes Center hike leader, will talk about life on a rancho and the overlooked hardships. In his talk he will include an overview of the history of the Mexican landgrants and the family of the Oliveras—the original owners of several anchos including Rancho Guadalupe, co-owned by Diego Olivera and Teodoro Arellanes. This co- ownership also brings up somewhat of a mystery.
