“Weary Blues: Poetry and Jazz from Langston Hughes” Exhibition
UCSB Arts Library, UCSB Campus, Santa Barbara CA
This exhibition, on display in the UCSB Arts Library Lobby through Aug. 31, was inspired by a recent multimedia presentation of “The Langston Hughes Project / Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz” at UCSB’s Multicultural Center, under the direction of Dr. Ron McCurdy. The performance brought Hughes’ epic poem “Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz” to life as the poet originally intended: with jazz musical accompaniment. A CD recording of the performance is available in the Music Library. The exhibition contains UCSB Library materials from the Music, Art, Black Studies, and Special Research Collections, as well as posters and fliers for The Langston Hughes Project from McCurdy’s personal collection. These materials showcase and honor Hughes’ lasting contributions to American culture. Kyra Folk-Farber, Assistant Music Librarian and Evolving Workforce Resident at UCSB Library, curated the exhibition. The exhibition can be viewed during Arts Library hours.

DEEP
The John and Peggy Maximus Gallery
Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, 2559 Puesta del Sol Road, Santa Barbara CA

For centuries, the presence of large creatures below the surface of the sea fueled the imagination of seafarers and populated early maps. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that the HMS Challenger expedition travelling with a crew of scientists systematically studied the oceans, collected specimens from various depths, and laid the foundations for modern oceanography. DEEP tells the story of this pioneering voyage as well as highlights Museum specimens and current research.

The Paintings of Moholy-Nagy: The Shape of Things to Come
Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara CA

Organized by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, this exhibition is the first to explore how the practice of painting served as the means for the artist to imagine generative relationships between art and technology. László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) is now recognized as one of the most influential members of the Bauhaus. While his legacy for later 20th-century art is typically linked to the photogram (a type of cameraless photography), the driving force behind this presentation is the relatively under-recognized role of the more traditional medium of painting throughout Moholy’s career, which is explored in a selection of 33 works of art ranging in date from the 1920s to 1940s, including paintings, works on paper, photograms, video projections, and a facsimile replica of Moholy’s prescient Light Prop―one of the first kinetic sculptures of its kind. The installation also includes a Kodachrome slide set (the latest in color photography innovation at the time), which comprises 12 luminous images.

The Visionary Photomontages of Herbert Bayer, 1929-1936
  June 21 – September 27, 2015
Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara CA

On display in the Ridley-Tree Gallery Works on Paper section—and in tandem with the international loan exhibition The Paintings of Moholy-Nagy: The Shape of Things to Come—is a selection of photographs by Bauhaus artist Herbert Bayer (1900–1985). Influenced by the photographic works of László Moholy-Nagy and the modernist Bauhaus credo―there is no one true art form but rather an intersection of all art in pursuit of an idea, Bayer’s work as a photographer reflects his mastery of graphic design. Made in Berlin as Weimar culture faded and Hitler rose to power, the exhibited photomontages grapple with the tumultuous modern world as the artist experienced it between the years 1929 and 1936.
