California's Wild Edge: The Coast in Poetry, Prints and History
Wildling Museum, 1511-B Mission Drive, Solvang CA

The exhibition captures the beauty of the California coast from Mendocino, Point Reyes, and the San Francisco Bay down through Carmel, Big Sur, Santa Barbara, and Santa Monica. Woodcut artist Tom Killion’s prints combine exquisite color with dynamic composition to portray the coast’s ever-changing moods and diverse formations: storm tides crashing at Point Lobos, serene moonlit coves at Mendocino, fog encircling the Golden Gate Bridge. Deepening the experience are poetry and prose from Gary Snyder and other well-known California poets of the past and present. The exhibition is originated by the San Francisco Public Library and is based on a new Heyday book by the same title.   ($5.00

Puja and Piety: Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist Art from the Indian Subcontinent
  April 17 – July 31, 2016
Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara CA

This exhibition celebrates the complexity of South Asian representation and iconography by examining the relationship between aesthetic expression and the devotional practice, or puja, in the three native religions of the Indian subcontinent. Drawn from SBMA’s collection and augmented by loans, the exhibition presents some 160 objects of diverse medium created over the past two millennia for temples, home worship, festivals, and roadside shrines. From monumental painted temple hangings to meditation diagrams and portable pictures for pilgrims, from stone sculptures to processional bronzes and wooden chariots, from ancient terracottas to various devotional objects for domestic shrines, this exhibition aims to examine and provide contextualized insights for both classical and popular works of art.    ($5 - $10)

Highlights of the Permanent Collection
  Opens February 7, 2016 – Ongoing
Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara CA

In celebration of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s 75th Anniversary in 2016, this installation highlights the most celebrated works of art from SBMA’s permanent collection, as well as several of the most exciting gifts and acquisitions in the areas of modern and contemporary art, photography, and the arts of Asia. The small works on paper gallery features favorite photographs of former curator, Karen Sinsheimer, as a tribute to her vision in the building of the permanent collection. This eclectic group of objects, meant to sample the breadth and diversity of the permanent collection while some of the Museum’s galleries are temporarily closed for renovation, includes favorites such as the sensual life-size bronze Bather Putting Up Her Hair (1932) by Aristide Maillol, the haunting Yuan dynasty Seated Luohan (13th century), and the important, early painting by the famed Bay Area Figuration artist Richard Diebenkorn. Ridley-Tree Gallery also continues to showcase favorites of 19th-century Impressionism, such as the beloved Villas in Bordighera (1884) by Claude Monet, along with the long-term loans from the Armand Hammer Foundation and the collection of Michael Armand Hammer. Works of art honoring the collecting acumen of Karen Sinsheimer include photographs such as Michael Light’s captivating appropriation of Southern Lunar Hemisphere (1999)—a work that demonstrates the late curator’s fascination with innovative intersections of art and science.    ($5 - $10)

Lewis deSoto: Paranirvana (Self-Portrait)
  On view April 17 – July 31, 2016
Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara CA

Works by Lewis deSoto are informed by the artist’s longstanding interest in anthropology, history, mythology, and religion. Proficient in a variety of media, DeSoto is recognized for his photography, sculpture, and mixed media installations that incorporate video, sound, and performance. Paranirvana (Self-Portrait) (2015) is the most recent work in a series of oversize, inflatable sculptures based on the figure of the 12th-century Buddha at Gal Vihara in Sri Lanka. Conceived after his father died, figures from this series are in recline, much like the famous Buddha, and painted with features that resemble the artist. This work is just as much a self-portrait as it is a representation of universal life, death, and supreme consciousness. Activated with a low-noise industrial fan, the 26-foot long, 6-foot high sculpture inflates (inhales) when switched on, and deflates (exhales) when switched off at the end of each day, alluding to the spiritual breath, or Prana, in Hindu philosophy. Prevailing among a vast range of counterpoints: monumental and ephemeral, witty and thought-provoking, Paranirvana (Self-Portrait) rouses reflections upon existence, loss, spirituality, and much more. This work was specially commissioned by SBMA and is presented in the Museum’s historic Ludington Court.    ($5 - $10)

CALIFORNIA 101: Art from the Collection
Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UCSB Campus, Santa Barbara CA

CALIFORNIA 101: Art from the Collection features artists that studied or lived for a significant period of time in the Golden State. For many years, the art world dismissed the West Coast as a creative backwater. In critical seclusion, post-war artists used California's art schools and universities, including UCSB, to build a network of artist collectives and social movements that spurred innovation and fostered the rise of conceptual art. This exhibition focuses on work from the Museum's collection created during this critical period through to the present day. Including works tied to the Feminist and Black Arts movements, postmodern photography, painting, sculpture, and video art. CALIFORNIA 101 has been mounted in conjunction with Prof. Jenni Sorkin’s class, Art in California, 1940-2016, who will use the works on view for teaching and research purposes.

Lucile Lloyd: A Life in Murals
Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UCSB Campus, Santa Barbara CA

This exhibition focuses on the life and work of California muralist and designer Lucile Lloyd (1894-1941). Lloyd worked closely with architects in creating murals and decorative designs for churches, schools and private residences around the Los Angeles area as well as producing work for the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Arts Project. Lloyd’s designs vary from abstract motifs to historical figures to religious and mythological scenes but they all share her sense of imagination and use of vivid color. Also on loan for the first time is her exquisite altarpiece from the St. Mary of the Angels Church in Los Feliz, California. Curated by Alexandra Adler, BA 2014 Art History.

Stars and Candy Wrappers, Artist-in-Residence: Stephen Westfall
Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UCSB Campus, Santa Barbara CA

As the 2015 Artist-in-Residence, Stephen Westfall (BA 1975, MFA 1978) has been commissioned to execute a massive painting covering all four walls of Nachman Gallery. Westfall's signature hardedge, geometric brand of abstraction will transform the gallery surfaces into a series of multicolored diamonds, clustered together and floating individually according to an underlying pattern of arrangement. Westfall's design is based on his longstanding investigation of grids, color arrangements, signs and painterly influences that include Picasso's harlequins, Matisse's dancers and Renaissance figures.

The Art of Colonial Latin America
Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UCSB Campus, Santa Barbara CA

Drawn entirely from the Museum’s Collection, this exhibition focuses on the upper division course, The Arts of Spain and New Spain, taught by Deborah Spivak, Ph.D., History of Art and Architecture Department at UCSB. This course charts both the revolution of the arts in 16th and 17th century Spain and their influence and transformation in the visual culture of the New World. The works on view demonstrate the creative interaction of the European and indigenous traditions in the paintings and wood carvings that were produced in this rich artistic period. The objects in the exhibition span the 17th and 18th centuries in both Central and South America. Students in the course will be writing papers about the form, content, and affective properties of the objects on display.

TALK: The Physiology and Politics of Emotion Metaphors
UCSB Interdisciplinary Humanities Center, McCune Conference Room, 6020 HSSB, UCSB, Santa Barbara CA
Some emotions are hard to love: spite, self-pity, and hatred among them. Metaphors used to represent these obnoxious urges combine bodily experiences with cultural beliefs. In a tradition stretching from The Pilgrim’s Progress to Who Moved My Cheese?, writers have developed a family of metaphors urging readers to “let go” of these emotions and “move on.” These metaphors play roles not just in literary works like Great Expectations but in scientific discussions of emotions and popular films like Bridesmaids. The political dimension of these metaphors becomes visible as one considers whose feelings they describe. Emotions that seem obstructive to some may feel to others like vital expressions of their humanity. Sponsored by the IHC series The Humanities and the Brain.   ($0

Troublemakers: The Story of Land Art ..... In the tumultuous 1960s and ’70s, a cadre of renegade artists – including Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt, Carl Andre and others – sought to transcend the limitations of painting and sculpture by producing monumental earthworks in the desolate deserts of the American southwest. “Among the great art documentaries of the last half-century” (The Wall Street Journal), Troublemakers reveals their sheer audacity and their ambitions to break free from tradition.
