    The Penelopiad
Severson Theatre, Allan Hancock College Campus, Santa Maria CA
> DETAILS
> HIDE
The Penelopiad is Margaret Atwood's new stage adaptation of her own wry, witty, and wise novel. In what amounts to a theatrical Olympiad, Penelope and her wronged maids tell their side of the story - how she waited 20 years, devoted and dutiful, for the return of her husband Odysseus from the Trojan War instigated by the legendary beauty of Helen of Troy. As Penelope - perhaps the first desperate housewife to appear in art - fends off the attentions of greedy suitors, traveling minstrels regale her with the news of Odysseus' epic adventures around the Mediterranean, only to have him repay her and her maids' devotion with heart-wrenching ruthlessness. Full of music, poetry, and movement, this new telling of an ancient story echoes from the hearts of the maids with the fluidity of the original mythic material and resonance for today.

In The Red and Brown Water
UCSB Performing Arts Theater, University of California, Santa Barbara campus, Santa Barbara CA
> DETAILS
> HIDE
Drawing on folk tales, Yoruba mythology and contemporary poets, this first work in 2013 MacArthur fellow Tarell McCraney’s The Brother/Sister Plays trilogy tells a coming-of-age story set in a Louisiana bayou housing project. Oya, a promising young track star, looking for a way out of her limited circumstances, has to choose between her dreams of escape and the reality of caring for her mother. Further complicating her situation, she must decide between Ogun Size – the man she “should” be with, and Shango – the man to whom she is passionately drawn. This riveting play is often described as a theatrical poem encompassing story, dance and song. Feb 27-28 / 8 pm March 1 / 2 pm March 5-7 / 8 pm    ($13 - $17)
