Water Wise Home Garden
Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, 1212 Mission Canyon Road, Santa Barbara CA

Originally the Home Demonstration Garden designed by landscape architect Ron Lutsko, the Water Wise Home Garden features our Easy California Native Plants in a variety of landscape applications: sunny mixed borders, shady understory of a mature oak tree, ground covers, and decorative potted plants. These plans are easy to grow, readily available (at the Garden Growers Nursery and elsewhere), drought tolerant, wildlife habitats, and beautiful! Its small scale and realistic setting make this garden relevant to today's home gardener. The displays in the garden highlight ways you can be water savvy at home.

Tattoo & Scrimshaw: the Art of the Sailor
Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, 113 Harbor Way, Santa Barbara CA

Celebrating the long history of nautical tattoos and sailor art, with a blend of historical artifacts, archival photos and contemporary photography. LIFE OF THE SAILOR – SUPERSTITION AT SEA The seaman’s life during the Age of Sail (16th to mid-19th century) was hard and often shortened by natural and man-made dangers. Tattoos identified a man as a long-term sailor who earned his living primarily at sea. A complex system of superstitions grew over time that offered comfort and protection in this dangerous environment. Tattoos became a part of these beliefs. Exhibit is so popular, it has been extended to October 31, 2016.   ($0 - $10)

Point Conception Lighthouse Fresnel Lens
Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, 113 Harbor Way, Santa Barbara CA

The Point Conception first order Fresnel lens has stood watch for nearly 160 years, guiding ships safely around the “Cape Horn of the Pacific.” The Point Conception lens was designed and built in Paris, France in 1854, using a refracted prism system designed by French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel. The lens was first lit on February 1, 1856. Because of persistent heavy fog at higher elevation, a second lighthouse was built on the lower bluff, and the lens was moved in June, 1882. While the lens saw many vessels meet their ultimate fate in this “graveyard” of the Central Coast, the light also saved and provided safe passage to thousands of vessels over the years.

Exhibition – Women Sculptors
Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art, 955 La Paz Road, Santa Barbara CA
Inspired by the opening exhibition at downtown Los Angeles’ new Hauser Wirth & Schimmel art complex, The Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art unveils a surprise exhibition, “Women Sculptors,” before the museum’s official fall opening. “Women Sculptors,” which includes selections from the museum’s permanent collection, features a wide variety of sculpture and prints by 16 prominent 20th century and contemporary female sculptors. The exhibition will remain up through Saturday, Oct. 1, during weekdays 10-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. (closed 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for lunch), and closed on Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, please call the museum at (805) 565-6162. “A Westmont arts group recently visited the new downtown L.A. gallery to see “Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women, 1947–2016,” and it inspired us to look into our own collection and interpret the same theme,” says Judy Larson, R. Anthony Askew professor of art history and museum director. “Supplemented with a couple of outside loans, this permanent collection exhibition is a strong showing of 20th and 21st century women who sculpted, modeled, chiseled and constructed three dimensional art objects. The exhibition also features works from our growing print collection — all prints by women artists who also were known as sculptors. “Generous friends to the museum have enabled us to add gifts and acquisitions to our permanent collection.” Featured artists include: Dorthea Tanning (American, 1910 – 2012), Dorothy Dehner (American, 1901 –1994), Lee Bontecou (American, b. 1931), Louise Bourgeois (French, 1911 – 2010), Alison Saar (American, b. 1956), Louise Nevelson (American, 1899 – 1988), Nancy Graves (American, 1939 – 1995), Kiki Smith (American, born in Germany, b. 1954), Jenchi Wu (Korean American), Jill Vanderhoof (American), Asta Gröting (German, b. 1961), Jessica Stockholder (Canadian/American, b. 1959), Lynn Aldrich (American, b. 1944), Karen Karnes (American, b. 1925), Susan Tibbles (American) and Chakaia Booker (American, b. 1953).

California Condors
Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens, 500 Ninos Drive, Santa Barbara CA

With the opening of California Trails on Earth Day 2009, the Santa Barbara Zoo became one of a handful of zoos to exhibit these highly endangered scavengers – the largest land birds in North America, with wingspans topping 9½ feet. The Santa Barbara Zoo’s condors are still part of the recovery program and wear wing tags that identify them as individuals. The lower the number, the older the bird.

British Art from Whistler to World War II
Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara CA

September 18, 2016 – January 8, 2017 ..... Curated by art historian Peyton Skipwith and drawn entirely from the permanent collection of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, this selection of some 50 paintings, drawings, and sculptures presents an overview of British art from around 1890 through 1945. Essentially, the exhibition presents the story of modernism unique to England: the persistence of figuration even as the lessons from continental avant-garde practice were absorbed. Cubism, Surrealism, Suprematism, Expressionism, and Vorticism signaled a definitive rupture with the tradition of representational content as commonly understood and a decided move towards abstraction. Artists represented include three of the founders of the New English Art Club: Walter Sickert, Philip Wilson Steer, and Paul Maitland, who established an alternative exhibition space to the traditional spaces of the Royal Academy in the 1890s. Richly represented are those artists who attended the Slade School in the heady years right before World War I, including James Innes, Christopher Nevinson, Adrian Allinson, and Stanley Spencer. The show takes the visitor through the World Wars and the ultimate absorption of continental modernism in England with representative works by Wyndam Lewis, Paul Nash, John Tunnard, and Eileen Agar and concludes with the biomorphic abstractions of Graham Sutherland and Henry Moore.    ($6 - $10)

Cecil Beaton’s “London’s Honourable Scars”: Photographs of the Blitz
Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara CA

September 18, 2016 – January 8, 2017 ..... Adjacent to the “British Art from Whistler to World War II” exhibition, is a series of dramatic World War II photographs by Sir Cecil Beaton (1904–1980). Best known for his iconic images of royalty and movie legends and multi-award winning designs for such films as “My Fair Lady,” Beaton created extraordinary photographs of Britain during World War II’s cataclysm. Already established in the 1930s as a major fashion, society and Hollywood photographer, Beaton was hired by the UK’s Ministry of Information at the war’s outset to persuasively reflect the hardships and spirit of the British nation during this legendary time of trial.   ($6 - $10)

Seven Doors: Jan Tichy and the Chiaroscuro of Art Museum Collecting
Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara CA

September 18 – November 27, 2016 ..... In this unique presentation, artist Jan Tichy (b. 1974, Czech, resides in Chicago) has devised a special installation in direct response to the Museum’s current position in its 75-year history―on the brink of a transformative renovation, with the vibration and sound of concrete demolition palpable. The Museum is typically celebrated for the art that it displays. But in the situation of systematic overhaul for renovation in which SBMA finds itself, suddenly some doors that are habitually open, must be closed. Tichy is known for his time-based video installations, which are typically motivated by a specific social and institutional situation. In this case, the institution of the Museum is at a turning point in its evolution. Working with SBMA curators and with full access to the Museum’s rich documentation, which has recently been organized and mostly digitized in anticipation of the Museum’s 75th-anniversary year now underway, Tichy has combined his own work with seven objects that he has plucked from the Museum’s vast permanent collection. The result is a stunning, visually elegant, and meaningful exhibition in the hallowed spaces of the original 1912 post office structure, which was later designated the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in 1941.   ($6 - $10)

Done. Undone. Redone. The Chair
Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UCSB Campus, Santa Barbara CA

The evolution of the chair has depended upon the human body and the history of previous designs. The challenge of chair design is to balance form and function; it is as important to look at a chair as it is to sit in it. This exhibition explores the morphology of chair design and the 'object-ness' of the chair as a sculptural statement. Works from the eighteenth century to present day, including modern icons by Eames, Rietveld, Schindler, and Weber, reveal both the rejection and the revisiting of earlier styles. Curated by Lilit Sadoyan, Curatorial Fellow and Doctoral Candidate, History of Art and Architecture.

Irving J. Gill: Simplicity and Reform
Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UCSB Campus, Santa Barbara CA

Irving J. Gill (1870–1936) created a distinctive architecture in Southern California, using a refined and abstracted architectural vocabulary which he described as “the straight line, the cube, the arch, and the circle.” This exhibition examines Gill’s architectural language and his experiments with materials and construction. The roots of his idealistic achievement are traced to the social concerns of the Progressive era and the Arts and Crafts movement, and the influence of Chicago architectLouis Sullivan (1856–1924), who argued for a “new architecture in America,” unaffected by the past and based on a transcendental view of nature.

    Gary Clark Jr.
Santa Barbara Bowl, 1122 N. Milpas Street, Santa Barbara CA
Gary Clark Jr. with special guest: Shakey Graves. Ever since 2010, when Gary Clark Jr. wowed audiences with electrifying live sets everywhere from the Crossroads Festival to Hollywood’s historic Hotel Café, his modus operandi has remained crystal clear: “ I listen to everything...so I want to play everything.” The revelation that is the Austin-born virtuoso guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter finds him just as much an amalgamation of his myriad influences and inspirations. Anyone who gravitated towards Clark’s, 2011’s Bright Lights EP heard both the evolution of rock and roll and a savior of blues. The following year’s full-length debut, Blak And Blu, illuminated Clark’s vast spectrum.“Please Come Home” is reminiscent of Smokey Robinson, while “Ain’t Messin’ Around” recalls Sly and the Family Stone. 2014’s double disc Gary Clark Jr–Live projected Clark into 3D by adding palpable dimension and transcendent power –– songs soared and drifted from the epic, psychedelic-blues of “When My Train Comes In” to his anthemic, hip-hop, rock-crunch calling card “Bright Lights,” all the way down to the deep, dark, muddy water of “When The Sun Goes Down.”
