The Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art is honored to highlight local artists who paved the way for Modernism to thrive in Santa Barbara. The exhibition features James Armstrong, R. Anthony Askew, Michael Arntz, Herbert Bayer, Ciel Bergman, John Carlander, William Dole, Richard Dunlap, Michael Dvortcsak, Robert Frame, James Jarvaise, Kenneth Jewesson, Sheldon Kaganoff, Winston McGee, John Moses, Kenneth Nack, Kenneth Noland, Channing Peake, Aage Pedersen, Jens Pedersen, Paul Perlmutter, Joan Tanner, David Trowbridge, Guy Williams, and Seyburn Zorthian.
Santa Barbara, then as now, is best known for artists who paint picturesque landscapes and idealized portraits. Yet, a strong undercurrent of artists has always practiced avant-garde styles and techniques. Many of the exhibition’s featured artists actively exhibited in New York City and Los Angeles next to artists like Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Frans Kline, and Robert Motherwell. Gallery owners like Ruth Schaffner and Ester Bear encouraged Modernism by featuring these artists in their Santa Barbara galleries. The exhibition ends in 1990, but Modernism in Santa Barbara does not. A second generation, many of them students of the artists represented in this exhibition, carry forward Santa Barbara’s reputation as an arts mecca where the experimental and cutting-edge trends in art are highly valued.
