Ana Lisa Hedstrom is a world-renowned textile artist best known for her contemporary adaptations of shibori. The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art is honored to present Flat and Folded: Shibori by Ana Lisa Hedstrom from March 3 Ė April 30, 2017. Hedstromís thoughtful and inventive artwork features an amalgam of homemade natural and indigo dyes on kozo paper, textiles, and assembled wool felt.
After college, Hedstrom lived in Kyoto. In the heart of the Asian cultural capital, she developed a deep appreciation for Japanís graceful and natural aesthetic. Upon her return to the United States, she began practicing the ancient art of shibori, a Japanese resistance dye technique historically used to decorate kimono fabric. Using this laborious method, Hedstrom achieves intricately detailed patterns and culturally significant color combinations. Each unique artwork is made exclusively by hand.
