The total sightings for the day included masses of sea lions and sea birds, a pair of northbound gray whales, and a minimum, low estimate of at least 800 long-beaked common dolphins.

2/24 - Have You Seen Lotusland's Topiary Garden? ... The topiary garden’s centerpiece is a working clock, 25 feet in diameter, that dates from 1955. Renovated in 1998, the clock face now features three different low-growing succulents and copper zodiac signs that were crafted to replicate earlier ones. The clock is bordered by a ring of chalk sticks (Senecio mandraliscae).
In 2001, landscape designer Lori Ann David and Lotusland staff re-designed the area, which now features new topiaries created in shapes reflecting the original topiary circus. Twenty-six animals include a camel, gorilla, giraffe, and seal as well as chess pieces and geom...
2/24 - Japanese Garden Renovation Project ... The site of the Japanese garden was originally a reservoir that collected winter storm runoff and provided irrigation water for Kinton Stevens’ nursery. During 1968 to 1974, Madame Walska converted the pond and its surrounding plantings to a Japanese-style garden. Plantings include Japanese maples (Acer palmatum), camellias, azaleas, and several species of pine, which are pruned in the traditional niwaki style.
Bronze statues of cranes are often joined by egrets, ducks, kingfishers and many more. Huge koi troll the shallow waters. A collection of stone lanterns dots the landscape.
